Pelé’s family for removing the 10th shirt of the Santos club

According to the sports portal Lance, it was discovered that in a telephone contact, Pelé’s daughters had made a first request from Pelé’s daughters to the company’s president, Andrés Rueda, to comfort the family for the loss of the player revered as the best footballer in history.

Such an intention has already been expressed by Rueda, who admitted this possibility last year during an interview with a channel on the video platform YouTube.

Now, after death, the discussion must be resumed and bear fruit shortly.

According to information obtained during the previously cited interview, some of the staff members demanded that the number that marked the player’s career be permanently removed from Santos’ kit list.

However, Rueda made it clear that the decision must be taken by the majority of shareholders.

«Give back the 10-shirt, I won’t lie, we’ve thought about it several times. But the partners are divided. Some think the big toll is to continue the 10; others that it should be removed,” he explained.

He acknowledged they were cautious about the decision. “As a fan, I have my opinions, but as president, it has to be a tribute that the majority has to pay,” he clarified.

Pelé scored a total of 1,091 goals in 1,116 games in Santos’ white and black outfit between 1954 and 1974. It is the absolute mark in the history of the club, that of his loved ones.

On August 31, 2021, the former star began the game of his life against cancer. That day, during routine check-ups, he was diagnosed with a tumor in his colon.

He then underwent surgery at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo to remove the tumor and began chemotherapy sessions. Due to this condition, he was admitted for treatment in February 2022.

On November 29, he was admitted again to Einstein for a re-evaluation of the chemotherapy method.

Another December 21 report revealed that the patient “has progression of oncological disease and requires greater care for renal and cardiac dysfunction.”

According to Einstein’s most recent note, Pelé died this Thursday at 3:27 p.m. local time, the victim of multiple organ failure, the result of the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous clinical condition.
