Francesca Vecchioni, 47-year-old daughter of Roberto Vecchioni, told ‘Il Corriere della Sera’ how her father reacted when she revealed she was a lesbian by coming out.
“Honestly, I had no intention of coming out to my father because I was afraid of his reaction. He was the one who came to ask me,” she said.
“It was May, I was just out of puberty. He asked me if I was going out with someone: I spilled the juice I was drinking all over myself. Until then I hadn’t said anything about my love life: I didn’t want to lie and that’s why I left it out,” he added.
What did he answer him? “It was complicated. He was immediately alarmed: “Why don’t you tell me what’s going on? Is he a drug addict, a villain?! He won’t be in jail, will he?’. It was too much, I couldn’t tell him ‘It’s just that I’m not with a man dad, I’m with a woman!’. He was silent for a moment. Then he said to me: ‘But vaf*… you scared me… I didn’t know what to think anymore! But couldn’t you tell me right now?!’”.
Francesca explained that the moment of coming out is always very delicate for everyone. “You’re always afraid of coming out: it depends on what you think your parents expect of you. But expectations are shaped by society and therefore we are responsible for this matter ourselves: politicians, the media and each of us. That was also thirty years ago: today it should be different, even if there are unfortunately many cases in which coming out to the parents is still associated with an insurmountable wall. Now that I’m a mother, I understand the importance of these questions even better. And the reaction of my father and mother: they too were immediately welcome,” he concluded.
