A New Years Day in the water

A New Year’s Day in the water

After a white Christmas, the year is likely to end with a gray New Year’s Day, with thaws and rainfall expected in Quebec over the next few days.

“Let’s say the rain obscures the picture we had in Quebec with all the snow that had fallen,” commented Simon Legault, meteorologist at Environment Canada.

Beginning tomorrow morning, a significant mild spell will be felt across Quebec well above seasonal norms.

Nothing has changed in the forecasts of the last few days: New Year’s Eve will be gray this year, tomorrow evening precipitation is expected in southern Quebec.

Temperatures will soon rise, reaching between 5 and 7 degrees in several places in the province.

In Montreal we expect about six millimeters of rain from tomorrow to Sunday. Therefore, care should be taken when driving as some sections of the road may be slippery.

We should mainly be entitled to fog and occasional rain showers.

Quieter

The scenario still looks much calmer than for the Christmas celebrations.

Similar warnings were issued on the Quebec side, but people partying in the capital could see the rain turning to snow on the evening of December 31.

The Côte-Nord and Abitibi regions are spared this system and instead receive small amounts of snow; a total of 2 to 4 centimeters is expected for these regions.

For the Saguenay, a small white carpet should cover the ground on the morning of January 1st.

Environment Canada is forecasting no freezing rain for the weekend, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see rain in the southern sectors of Quebec by the middle of next week.
