Nearly 20 million vaccine doses have been administered in Austria to date. The number of damages caused by the vaccine is in the range per thousand.
AUSTRIA. The Vaccination Damage Act allows people to claim damages. In their applications, people describe fatigue, headaches or dizziness, but also thrombosis, inflammation of the heart muscle or chronic fatigue, explains Katharina Reich, the country’s top health official and general director of public health in the morning newspaper “Ö1” of Friday. So far, according to the Ministry of Health, 1,619 claims under the Vaccination Damage Act have been filed with the state. Of these, 50 were recognized. 38 people received a one-time compensation of 2,000 euros, another 12 receive a monthly pension of 700 euros. According to Reich, the fact that there is so little proven damage to vaccination is due to the fact that many applications are made without medical proof.
However, the diagnosis of exclusion is often used. “Medical harms that can be clearly attributed to vaccination need not be documented in black and white,” says Reich. “There are many cases where it’s a diagnosis of exclusion, there’s nothing left other than it was probably the vaccination – and those claims are acknowledged.”

Unlike a predictable reaction to vaccination, such as local swelling or fever, the damage caused by vaccination represents a serious side effect of vaccination, explains the head of the vaccination department at the Medical Association, Rudolf Schmitzberger. Schmitzberger justified the fact that the AstraZeneca vaccine had a significantly higher reporting rate than the Biontech-Pfizer or Moderna vaccines with the greater number of younger people being vaccinated with this vaccine. These would tend to stronger vaccination reactions. In addition, Schmitzberger led the spring and summer 2021 media coverage of AstraZeneca at the heightened awareness meeting. “The virus is the danger, not the vaccination”, emphasized the doctor.
For vaccination against TBE, flu and hepatitis, 8.5 million vaccinations were carried out in 2011 and 2020, within the free childhood vaccination program. Eleven damages caused by vaccination were recognized. It will also be checked very carefully later and the damage caused by the vaccination could also be reported later, according to Schmitzberger.
