Baghdad, April 24.- Iran and Saudi Arabia held the fifth round of talks this Saturday, resuming diplomatic talks that were being held to resolve their differences.
“The fifth round of talks between the senior figures of Iran and Saudi Arabia took place in Baghdad,” reported Nour News Agency, part of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
The Persian media reported that the issues that keep Tehran and Riyadh in a hostile relationship were discussed.
The atmosphere of the meeting was described by the agency as positive to “raise hope that the two countries are taking a step towards resuming relations”.
“It is expected that a joint meeting of the foreign ministers of both countries will take place soon,” the agency reported.
The dialogue between the two countries was interrupted by the Iranian side without the reasons being officially communicated.
It is estimated that this was due to the al-Saud regime’s execution of more than 80 people for alleged terrorist attacks and attacks on Saudi officials.
These talks, which have been taking place since April 2021, aim to minimize the geopolitical rivalry between Tehran and Riyadh.
Diplomatic relations between the Persian nations have been suspended since January 2016, when protests took place outside the Saudi diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashad over the execution of a Shia cleric who denounced the historical discrimination against this community in Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Nimr Baqer al- Nimr.
