Myanmar’s ousted Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi (77) was sentenced to another multi-year prison term on Friday. According to court circles, a court found her guilty of five counts alone in a corruption trial. Suu Kyi, who was already sentenced to 26 years in prison in previous trials, now faces seven more years behind bars.
The judgment concerned the loan of a government helicopter to a member of the government. Suu Kyi is accused of not following rules and causing “damage to the state”. Each of these offenses carries a sentence of up to 15 years.
The military overthrew Myanmar’s elected Suu Kyi government in February 2021 and seized power. Since then, the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been found guilty of 14 counts, ranging from corruption to illegally importing walkie-talkies and violating the Official Secrets Act. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has denied all allegations as politically motivated.
