Minister rules out Russian gas embargo

Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler has again rejected a Russian gas embargo. She calls an exit in 2027 “ambitious”.

Leonore Gewessler (Greens) spoke out again on Sunday against a Russian gas embargo. As the APA informs, citing the “Presse am Sonntag”, the Minister of Environment and Energy does not currently consider a possible exit, but an exit plan is being worked on. The Greens politician told other media outlets including “Kurier” and “oe24” that the EU’s stated goal – ending dependence on Russian gas by 2027 – was “very ambitious”.

LPG and own production

Gewessler puts Norwegian supplies on the line as a possible alternative to Russian gas. “We are already receiving gas from Norway. We need to strengthen this route”, says Gewessler. In addition, the import of liquid gas can also be boosted, for example, from Holland, Italy or from German terminals. However, she declined to put an exact number on how much Russian gas could be replaced by other suppliers in the short term.

At the same time, phasing out Russian gas also requires reduced gas consumption in Germany and increased domestic production of biogas or hydrogen. Every gas boiler replaced would help, the politician told the “press”. There are already some subsidies for renovation measures in residential construction. In the area of production, renewable alternatives in particular should be promoted, concluded the minister.
