Jeremiah Green, co-founder and drummer of Modest Mouse, has died at the age of 45 after a brief battle with cancer.
The band’s frontman, Isaac Brock, announced Green’s death in a Facebook message posted just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. “I don’t know how to go about this: today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah. He lay down and just disappeared. I’d like to say a few nice words right now, but it’s just not the time. These come later and from many people. Please appreciate all the love you give, receive, have given and will receive. Jeremiah was all about love.”
Just five days ago, Green’s mom, Carol Namatame, went public with her son’s battle with stage four cancer and asked fans to send “healing vibrations.” In a subsequent statement, Brock said Green was “recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently under treatment. It seems to be running smoothly and making a positive difference.”
Green co-founded Modest Mouse in 1993 with frontman Brock and bassist Eric Judy. Aside from a brief departure from the band between 2003 and 2004, Green has been a consistent presence in the group’s lineup and is the longest-serving member alongside Brock. He appeared on all Modest Mouse albums except Good News for People Who Love Bad News and also played in the bands Red Stars Theory and Vells.
Green had been touring with Modest Mouse just last month as part of the band’s tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their landmark album The Lonesome Crowded West.
