War in Ukraine live: New Year’s Eve marked by bombings in Kyiv and promises of victory on both sides

  • About thirty minutes after midnight, Russian rockets fell on two districts of Kyiv. announced its mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram. No new injuries were immediately reported. Several Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, had been targeted on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

  • Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu promised his soldiers an “inevitable” victory and reports a new prisoner exchange that allowed the return of 82 Russian soldiers. For their part, the Ukrainian authorities announced that they had rescued 140 people.
