Jeremiah Green, co-founder and drummer for rock band Modest Mouse, died Saturday night after a battle with cancer, the group announced. He was 45.
“I don’t know how to go about this: Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah,” the band wrote on their official Facebook page just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. “He settled down and just faded away. I’d like to say a few nice words right now, but it’s just not the time. These come later and from many people. Please appreciate all the love you give, receive, have given and will receive. Jeremiah was all about love. We love you.”
Modest Mouse announced Green’s stage four cancer diagnosis just days earlier: “Jeremiah was recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently under treatment. It seems to be running smoothly and making a positive difference. Jeremiah, like me, believes in the power of positive energy. So if you would be so kind as to send “good vibes” (to quote Jeremiah) toward Jeremiah and his family, that would be great.”
Green formed Modest Mouse in Washington in 1992 with singer and lead guitarist Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy, who left the group in 2012. The drummer briefly left Modest Mouse in 2003 but rejoined and has recorded and toured with the group for years. Outside of Modest Mouse, he has previously played with the bands Vells, Satisfact, Red Stars Theory and Peeved. A celebrated drummer in indie rock music, he was ranked #37 on Stylus Magazine’s list of the top 50 rock drummers.
Current members of Modest Mouse include Brock, Tom Peloso, Russell Higbee, Ben Massarella and Simon O’Connor. The band has released seven studio albums beginning with 1996’s “This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About” and featuring popular songs like “Float On”, “Ocean Breathes Salty”, “Dashboard” and “Lampshades on Fire”. ” Her latest album “The Golden Casket” was released on June 25, 2021.
