Despite Ukraine’s ban on fireworks, a 47-year-old man detonated rockets in Kyiv on New Year’s Eve and now faces a lengthy prison sentence.

“Now he faces five years in prison,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram on Sunday.

Neighbors informed police about fireworks in Kyiv

Neighbors had informed the police about the prohibited fireworks. The police arrested the man and confiscated an entire warehouse of fireworks in his apartment. The 47-year-old is being charged with hooliganism, police said.

An air raid alarm sounded just after the fireworks

In Ukraine, there is a general ban on fireworks during the state of war. Shortly after the illegal fireworks, an air alert was sounded in Kyiv because Russia had launched a wave of so-called kamikaze drones on the Ukrainian capital.
