Prince Harry says Buckingham Palace refused to support him and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry says he has been forced to make his concerns to the royal family public. In a clip from his forthcoming interview with 60 Minutes, Prince Harry explained that he and his wife Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, have spoken out against tabloids.

“Every time I tried it privately, there were briefings and leaks and stories against me and my wife,” he tells host Anderson Cooper in the clip. “You know, the family motto is never complain, never explain, but it’s just a motto.”

“There’s a lot to complain about and explain,” interjects Cooper, “that’s done with leaks.”

“They will feed or chat with the correspondent,” Prince Harry continues. “And that correspondent is literally being fed information and writing the story. And they’ll end up saying they’ve reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. But the whole story comes from Buckingham Palace. So if for the past six years we’ve been told, “We can’t make a statement to protect you.” But you do it for other family members. It gets… it gets to a point where silence is treason.”

Prince Harry’s conversation with Cooper will air on Sunday January 8th. It will only be a few days before his new memoir, aptly titled Spare, will hit bookstore shelves and become the king’s first publicity for the book on US television.

Last month, Netflix released a six-episode documentary series, Harry & Meghan, directed by Liz Garbus. The first three episodes chronicled the couple’s tabloid-devastated love story, from the couple’s first date to their wedding, while the last three dealt more with their departure from the royal family and the drama that ensued.

Spare will be released on January 10, 2023. The 416-page book will be available in hardcover and audiobook (on CD), read by Prince Harry himself. The book’s description states: “With his raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is one landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
