The famous Rolling Stone magazine has drawn the ire of many music lovers since Sunday, the day it published its list of the greatest singers of all time. While we find there Aretha Franklin (first), Frank Sinatra, Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, Adele, but also Rosalía, Billie Eilish (the youngest on the list), Ozzy Osbourne or Kurt Cobain, one name does not appear in the ranking : Celine Dion’s.
Thoughtful and presumptive decision? Just forget? Rolling Stone has not yet commented on the case, but social media is on fire and many media outlets, especially in Europe and Canada, are writing about this surprising omission on Monday. In the eyes of many, the American magazine simply “snubbed” the Quebec singer.
“For Rolling Stone to remove Celine Dion from its list of the greatest singers of all time is a crime against humanity,” wrote one user on Twitter. “To remove her from your list of the 200 Greatest Female Singers of All Time must be an unfortunate mistake…because to do so on purpose would be criminal,” wrote another.
“Delete your article until you place Celine Dion in the top 5 list,” urged one user in a tweet. [Elle est] the greatest singer of all time. »
Despite Celine Dion’s undisputed legacy, the Rolling Stone team gave preference to her 200 other artists, though she claims to have included “the singers who shaped history and shaped our lives.”
“Remember, this is the list of the greatest singers, not the list of the greatest voices,” Rolling Stone warns, putting in context in the text that precedes its ranking. “Definitely what mattered most to us was the originality, the impact, the depth of the catalog and the breadth of an artist’s musical legacy. »
Celine Dion, now 54, has released 27 albums, sold more than 200 million copies and received five Grammy awards, among other achievements.
Aretha Franklin tops Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 Greatest Female Singers. The Queen of Soul is followed (in that order) by Whitney Houston, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Otis Redding, and Al Green.
