Unemployment in 2022 was the lowest since 2008. Even the number of long-term unemployed is decreasing, while there are many jobs open. The reason for this is also the demographic change.
The past year was special in many ways. Despite the numerous crises – the war in Ukraine and the consequent wave of inflation make the pandemic almost forgotten – 2022 was an exceptionally good year for the Austrian job market. And this despite the fact that the post-pandemic economic recovery was quickly stifled by skyrocketing energy prices.
The domestic labor market is not affected by this. That’s what the labor market figures for 2022 presented on Monday show: “We’ve had a great year for the labor market,” said AMS board member Johannes Kopf. “Development was significantly better than anticipated at Christmas 2021. And this despite the fact that at that time no one had counted on the outbreak of war in Ukraine and its aftermath.”
Is the Austrian job market really so robust that the current economic crisis has left it untouched? And how will demographic change affect the labor market in the medium term? “Die Presse” with an attempt at classification.
