Two years after a brutal attack on a TV crew of the “ZDF Heute Show”, the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges. Three men and a woman are charged.
The attack happened with the speed of light. On May 1, 2020, several people dressed in black and masked attacked a crew from the ZDF satirical program “Heute Show” on the sidelines of a demonstration by self-proclaimed lateral thinkers and crown deniers in Berlin. The attackers beat their victims with metal bars and fists. TV journalists reportedly suffered injuries, some even temporarily losing consciousness.
Now, more than two years later, the Berlin public prosecutor has filed charges for the brutal attack at the Tiergarten district court. According to WDR information, four people, a 33-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, and a 30-year-old woman, are charged with joint grievous bodily harm. The 33-year-old is also accused of resisting authorities when he was arrested.
Investigators assume confusion
More recently, the indictment was repeatedly delayed, although several suspects were identified shortly after the crime. Among them were several people assigned to the radical left scene. However, the suspects initially refused to collect DNA, which is why the investigation could not be completed sooner.
Investigators from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) assume the attack was a mix-up. It is assumed that the extreme left spectrum attackers originally wanted to attack right-wing extremists and people from the lateral thinker scene.
