Former trade unionist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took over Brazil’s presidency for the third time on Sunday after facing fierce political and judicial persecution that landed him in prison without evidence for 580 days.
The Labor Party founder, who returned to politics in March 2021, is beginning his third term. Former spinner Lula won the presidential elections of 2002, 2006 and October 2022.
The new president vowed to end hatred and inequality after receiving the sash that made him Brazil’s 39th head of government.
Lula vowed that he would fight all forms of inequality in his country in terms of income, gender, race, in the labor market, in political representation, in health care and in education.
