“1899”, one of Netflix’s bets, surprises and will not be renewed

The series “1899” (Netflix) was canceled via streaming about a month after its premiere.

The information was confirmed by Baran Bo Odar, creator and production manager, on social media.

Odar said he had “pain in the heart”. “We’d love to wrap up this amazing journey with a second or third season, just like we did with ‘Dark.’ But sometimes things don’t go the way we planned. So life is. We know this will disappoint millions of fans around the world, but we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this adventure. We love you. We will never forget it,” reads the statement, which was signed by cocreator and screenwriter Jantje Friese.

The series was accused of plagiarism by a Brazilian. Shortly after the series’ release in November, Brazilian comic artist Mary Cagnin accused Netflix of copying her 2016 comic book, Black Silence. “It really breaks my heart to see something like this happen,” she said.

Authors denied plagiarism. “Until yesterday we didn’t even know this comic existed. Over the course of two years, we put pain, sweat and exhaustion into the creation of 1899. This is an original idea and not based on any material,” they said.
