The 1899 ship sank. The Netflix platform has decided to discontinue the expensive thriller born from the mind of the creators of Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. Unfortunately, the show wouldn’t be compelling enough to pass off for a second season. The creators confided their reaction to Instagram: “It is with an aching heart that we must inform you that 1899 will not be extended. We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season, like we did with Dark. but at times things don’t go the way you planned.”
The reaction of the makers
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are aware that they have disappointed millions of fans around the world, but most likely the second season of the series would have cost the platform too much from the big red “year-old”: “That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget it.” The critics weren’t very fond of the series. Grazia Sambruna wrote on Fanpage.it: “It’s the Titanic of pretentiousness, a rotten mystery”.
What the 1899 series is about
The series tells of a ship full of European migrants who are trying their luck in America, in New York, in 1899. However, something goes wrong on the crossing when they encounter the sister ship, which departed four months earlier and never arrived at its destination. The last episode’s twist, the series finale, caused an uproar that left everyone speechless. In fact, the narrative trick is similar to Westworld, another ambitious series that HBO canceled due to high costs. In the series, the secret of the Prometheus ship was actually discovered. The 19th-century steamer that transported European travelers seeking safety in America was actually a mental simulation resulting from sophisticated software developed by the same protagonist of the story, Maura, creator of the Prometheus Project. In fact, in the year 2099 we are in a spaceship whose ultimate goal is the survival of civilization.
