The scale of the lawsuits the former president is facing this time, and their potential consequences, far exceed what he has faced in the past.

The investigations that threaten Trump are not the first of his political career. The former president even appeared to have developed an almost supernatural ability to escape the consequences of his transgressions. From the investigation of special prosecutor Mueller to Russian interference in the 2016 election campaign to the two impeachment trials against him, his presidency was marked from beginning to end by these potential collisions with the law. But the Senate had twice acquitted him, and Mueller could find no evidence his campaign clashed with Moscow’s efforts to confuse the 2016 election.
