Surprise at the customs post between Germany and Switzerland: a 7-seater minivan with 23 people, including 14 children on board, was checked, the police said on Tuesday.

The Seat Alhambra vehicle, which was transporting members of an “extended family” traveling from Poland to the Swiss capital Bern, was arrested on Monday morning, German authorities said.

“Twenty-three people got out of the car,” the police said.

The passengers, including nine adults and 14 children, were checked at the Weil am Rhein border crossing in south-west Germany.

The driver of the vehicle, who lives in Switzerland, could now “expect a fine” for carrying so many passengers “without safety guarantees”, added the German police.

After completing the administrative formalities, the tribe was allowed to enter Switzerland, “but not all in the Seat Alhambra,” the police said.
