Goodbye to the Japanese cartoonist Gosaku Ota, designer of the famous manga of Mazinger Z, Grendizer and Jeeg Steel Robot, aka Ufo Robot, created by Go Nagai, of whom he was a close collaborator. Fantastic characters that became hugely popular in late 70’s cartoons and cult series in Italy in the 80’s and 90’s.
Ota was born on March 16, 1948 in Kaminoyama, Yamagata Prefecture and died on December 12, 2022 at the age of 74 due to complications from Covid, but by the will of the family, the news of his disappearance has only been published now, after the private funeral.
Many tributes appeared on social networks from various mangakas.
Ota’s career as a cartoonist began as an assistant to Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, Hokusai, Miyamoto Musashi) and then became one of Nagai’s key collaborators from the early 1970s. His manga versions of the sagas of Nagai Manziga Z, the great Mazinger, Grendizer, drawn on paper, have left an indelible impression.
