Known for its consumer health devices, Withings doesn’t stop at scales, thermometers, and blood pressure monitors anymore. A year after presenting its first connected health station, Body Scan, the company returns to CES to present another innovation: U-Scan, a home-use urinalysis laboratory.
For the less intrigued, this novelty aims to make it easier to carry out urinalysis in order to “perform biomarker analyzes in the comfort and privacy of your home”, Withings specifies in its press release.
Each throw has its own analysis
It must be said that urinalysis is rich in lessons, thanks in particular to the 3000 metabolites contained in this liquid, which is carelessly emptied several times a day (7 on average, according to Withings). The idea of Withings is therefore to use the comfort of our home to turn this harmless act into an opportunity to monitor our health even more closely.
The Withings U-Scan is installed in the bowl and connects to an application via Wi-Fi.

Shaped like a small 9cm diameter pebble, U-Scan is positioned in the toilet bowl and sucks in urine once its sensors detect the user’s stream – the device can identify the different users based on the ‘urine stream signature’ that is specific to them is specific (velocity, distance and spread). We assume its shape is designed to avoid spatter…
Different cartridges according to the measurements
Once collected, the urine is injected into one of the tiny capsules of the cylindrical cartridge contained within the object. A chemical analysis is then automatically started and then read with an optical reader. The result is sent via Wi-Fi to an application that is responsible for the interpretation and then provides the detailed analysis to the user. U-Scan then simply cleans itself when the toilet is flushed.
Withings will initially offer two specific cartridges: U-Scan Nutri Balance to provide metabolic information and advice on hydration and nutrition; and U-Scan Cycle Sync for tracking and synchronizing women’s menstrual cycles.
Attractive due to its innovative concept, U-Scan will not be affordable for all budgets as it is marketed as a starter kit (with a cartridge for 3 months of measurement) at a price of €499.95. The launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023 in Europe.
Subsequently, when the regulatory authorities have given their approvals, Withings also plans to commercialize medical cartridges for the “analysis of biomarkers related to various medical and health problems,” he specifies.
