First, information emerged that Janja did not want to welcome the Iranians to protest that they did not agree with the treatment of women in the country.
The First Lady was with Lula as the President spoke to Salvador Valdés, Vice President of Cuba. She stayed at her husband’s side for 30 minutes to speak and welcome all international delegations.
The moment the Iranian officials, led by Seyed Mohammad Hosseini, Vice President for Parliamentary Affairs, were announced, Janja took a few steps back and addressed Lu Alckmin, the second lady. The two talked and took photos.
After speaking to Lula and Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), the Iranians greeted Janja and Lu, who nodded back. There was no handshake.
After the Iranian representatives left, Janja returned to her post and welcomed Ralph Gonçalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Iran speaks up
Janja was praised on social media when supporters of Lula said the first lady was protesting human rights abuses being practiced by Iranians.
However, the Asian country’s embassy released a note denying the information. The explanation is that Janja was told to stay away from the Iranian representatives because they cannot shake hands with a woman.
