Quebec gyms are overflowing with clients

Workout rooms across Quebec are busier than ever as, for the first time since 2020, those with a resolution to be in better shape have access to start the year on the right foot.

“It’s been two years since we experienced the January madness, we’re rooting for it. There’s a lot of people, we’re really happy,” says Laurie Bellerive, the owner of TR Athletic Center, whose two facilities are in Mauricie.

Pandemic and Resolutions

With the end of the health restrictions linked to the pandemic, training rooms are in particularly high demand this time of year, as physical activity is one of the most popular resolutions among Quebecers, according to a Léger poll published in Le Newspaper on Monday.

Serge Poirier, the owner of the Halteres et Go gym in Rosemont, took a few minutes to chat on Tuesday before someone showed up at the counter for a subscription.

“January is going to be a very good month for subscriptions, people are calling a lot, writing to us for details and to sign up,” he comments.

After Holidays

Many studio owners mentioned to the Journal that the end of the Christmas holidays would be the real kick-off for 2023 resolutions.

“We should see new faces starting next week. There’s already madness we haven’t seen in two years [à pareille date] and it’s a pleasure,” explains Aurélien Malod, owner of the Gym du Plateau in Montreal.

Despite all goodwill, New Year’s resolutions often end after three weeks. However, certain measures can be taken to ensure you are in good shape all year round.

“It’s better to walk less but keep a good rhythm and find out what drives us in training,” explains François Deshaies, owner of Gymnase Drummond.
