Throughout his tenure, Bolsonaro has had frictions with Macron, largely over the Frenchman’s criticism of the Brazilian government’s stance on the environment.
Macron received 58.6% of the votes in the second ballot, held on Sunday (24th). His competitor, Marine Le Pen, representing the extreme right, had 41.4%.

Political tensions between Bolsonaro and Macron have escalated since 2019. During an event of the G7, a group of the richest countries in the world that does not include Brazil, Macron wrote on a social network that the fires in the Brazilian Amazon should be discussed “urgently”.
Later, at the G20 summit in Osaka, Macron said that if Brazil does not comply with the Paris Agreement, France will not ratify the Mercosur agreement with the European Union. The agreement has not yet been reached and is awaiting the approval of the parliaments of the various countries involved.
“The French President’s proposal to discuss Amazonian issues at the G7 without the participation of the countries of the region evokes a colonialist mentality inappropriate in the 21st century,” Bolsonaro replied amid the escalation of the crisis with the French.
In August 2019, the disagreements between the two presidents had an episode that radiated the political sphere.
The Brazilian President was heavily criticized for a comment deemed sexist in a follower’s post on a social network comparing the first ladies of Brazil and France. The follower posted photos of the presidents accompanied by their wives with the question: “Now do you understand why Macron is pursuing Bolsonaro?”.
The follower added: “It’s envy of the President of Macron, can you believe (sic)”. Bolsonaro responded to the comment by saying: “Rodrigo Andreaça does not humiliate kkkkk”.
Commenting on the episode, Macron said: “Since I have great friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will soon have a President who behaves according to their standards,” the French President said.
