Twitter loosens advertising ban for political content

Twitter is relaxing its political advertising policy. The US short messaging service will review its “social advertising” policy in the United States and “bring it in line with that of television and other media,” the company said under new owner Elon Musk.

Twitter banned political advertising in 2019 after the company and other social networks like Facebook came under fire for failing to take comprehensive action against election misinformation. The company then also restricted ads related to social causes.

Advertisers have been fleeing Twitter since Musk took office in late October. They expressed concern over Musk’s plans to relax content moderation rules in the name of free speech. Critics warn that the platform could become a hotbed for hate speech, misinformation and conspiracy theories.
