Frightened Bali tourists forced to jump into the sea from a sinking boat

Terrified Bali tourists are forced to jump off a sinking boat when wild waters overwhelm the ship and strand them at sea in a storm: ‘This is the next level’

  • Bali tourists were filmed jumping off a sinking boat on Tuesday afternoon
  • The tourist boat going to Nusa Penida-Sanur was hit by a big wave
  • Former tourists warned others about the lack of safety measures in Indonesia

Terrifying footage has captured the moment a boat carrying dozens of tourists sank in rough Bali seas.

Passengers were seen wearing life jackets and jumping overboard the wrecked vessel, which sank around 4.30pm Tuesday as it was traveling from Nusa Penida-Sanur Island to mainland Bali.

More than 23 people were rescued, no casualties were reported.

According to a local news source, the boat was hit by a large wave that caused the ship to sink.

Luckily, several boats came close to rescue the passengers.

While there were no causal links, some passengers sustained minor injuries while exiting the boat. Personal items were also lost.

Footage of the ordeal has gone viral online, with many Aussies warning others about the risks of boat trips in Bali.

“If boats are canceled or there is a severe weather warning. Don’t try to find a cheap boat to take you across,’ said one.

“I vowed never to board one of those boats again after a horrible trip to Gili T when the captain got on his knees and started to pray,” said a second.

“We also encountered a shipping lane, which made it worse. These boat operators probably don’t have insurance and regular maintenance.”

A third wrote: “My husband and I had the most horrifying drive of our lives to Lembongan in 2019. As we were sitting at the airport a few days later, there was a newscast of two people dying in the same waters from a boat capsizing. There really must be better standards in Bali.’

“The safety procedures and Australian standards that we have here just don’t exist over there,” commented another.

“Please keep that in mind with whatever you decide to do over there. They need the money so they can keep going.”

A fifth added: “We will never get a boat in Bali again, this is a trauma we will never forget.”

“These are the regular boats that go back and forth every day. I’ve done the journey many times, it’s always a scary ride. I don’t think maintenance is a top priority. I hope everyone on board made it safely to shore,” said another.
