A young female driver with suspected disabilities and her passenger escaped with minor injuries after falling 15 meters from a vehicle to end up in the Saguenay River in Chicoutimi.
The road trip took place around 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Motel Panoramique sector on Saguenay Boulevard.
According to the Saguenay Police Department, the vehicle was traveling west toward Jonquière when the motorist lost control after overtaking in his early 20s.
The vehicle then hit a snowdrift that acted like a launch pad, spokesman Carl Tremblay said.
He crossed the guardrail, then overturned in a 15 meter deep ravine and landed in the creek on the roof.
“By the time police arrived, the two occupants were already gone. We’re talking about minor injuries. We requested the assistance of firefighters and a special trailer to extricate the vehicle from its unfortunate position,” said Mr Tremblay.
The two occupants were taken to the hospital but there is no fear for their lives. Police found the driver gave off a strong smell of alcohol and ordered a blood test to confirm their suspicions.
other incident
Earlier in the evening, SPS officers had encountered another driver who was affected.
Patrol officers were parked on the side of Monfort Street around 8.30pm when they were grazed by a motorist who narrowly avoided colliding with their vehicle, says Mr Tremblay.
The police intercepted him. They noticed that he “smelt strongly of alcohol” and had red eyes. He was taken to the police station, where he exceeded almost four times the legal alcohol limit.
The suspect has been released and will appear in court in the coming weeks.
