The author of the possible femicide that took place in Montreal on Boxing Day would have used a ladder to enter his victim’s home by smashing a window, suggesting his gesture was premeditated.

The victim is Marie Josie Vanté St-Ville, 45, the Coroner’s Office confirmed to the Journal. This would be the 14th woman killed by a spouse or ex-spouse in the province in 2022.

According to our information, Jacques Jérôme Estimé, 45, broke into Ms Vanté St-Ville’s balcony window before murdering her with a hammer and taking his own life.
The two bodies were found in a stairwell of the building in Pointe-aux-Trembles in east Montreal.
“It definitely shows a level of determination. You can see from the start that this guy had malicious intentions. Breaking in and entering is already a crime. It wasn’t on the right side,” comments André Gélinas, former Detective Sergeant at the Service de Police la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

“It is a phenomenon of cowardice. He does the irreparable and then he commits suicide,” adds the ex-cop.
no story
Jacques Jérôme Estimé had no criminal record. He worked as a security guard at GardaWorld. He has been with the company since 2019, the media relations team confirmed by email.
Investigators point out that the suspect and his victim were already having an affair, but don’t know if they were still a couple at the time of the tragedy. One thing is certain, Mrs Vanté St-Ville lived alone.
The man who would have murdered her would have come into her life two or three months ago.
“I didn’t hear any harassment or anything before. I could hear him cleaning and talking,” a neighbor said on condition of anonymity. The lady lived in a nearby apartment for about two years, he said.
It is difficult for him to explain how the man could have come to this.
“What causes an emotional or marital relationship to go sour at a certain moment and the guy suddenly “freaks out” and decides to kill the girl? We would like to find a way to intervene upstream,” says André Gélinas, who worked at the SPVM for 21 years.
help for neighbors
The organization Prévention Pointe-de-l’Île is organizing a meeting for the affected neighbors on January 11th at the Center Roussin.
“Sometimes talking is a solution. We try to put the citizens at the center of our actions. We want to support them in this,” explains Managing Director Johanne Daigle.
Workers knocked on a hundred neighborhood doors for the gathering, which is part of the community resilience program involving five boroughs in northeast Montreal, including Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-at-Trembles.
Last year, citizens made a “diagnosis” of their concerns about city safety. In Pointe-aux-Trembles the issue of femicides was mentioned.
“We’ve had a few in the last year,” says Ms. Daigle.
