Brewers to Acquire Bryse Wilson From Pirates – MLB Trade Rumors

3:55 p.m: In a related move, the Brewers have designated right-hander Trevor Kelly for action, per Curt Hogg’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Kelley, 30, was signed in a minor league deal ahead of the 2022 season and was added to the squad in May. He pitched 34 1/3 triple-A innings with a 2.36 ERA but posted a 6.08 ERA in 23 2/3 big league innings.

3:10 p.m: The Brewers announced they’ve acquired right-handers Bryse Wilson from the pirates. Wilson was picked last week by the Bucs, who will receive cash payments from Milwaukee on the deal.

Wilson, 25, was selected by Atlanta in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. He shot up the prospect rankings in 2018 when he rose from high-A to double-A to triple-A and the majors at the age of 20. After that surge, Baseball America ranked him 80th in the league for the 2019 season.

Unfortunately, Wilson was unable to deliver that excitement in subsequent seasons. Atlanta frequently picked him for the minors during the 2019-2021 seasons, allowing him to only play 20 major league games during that time. They then brought him to Pittsburgh as part of the 2021 deadline Richard Rodriguez act.

With the Bucs in 2022, he had the most extensive MLB action of his career to date, throwing 115 2/3 innings over 20 starts and six relief appearances. He posted a 5.52 ERA during that time with a solid 6.3% walk rate and 43.3% ground ball rate, but a meager 15.5% strikeout rate.

Now with no options, Wilson’s rotation opportunities at Pittsburgh appear to have dried up, but the Brewers are willing to give it a try. The front of the Milwaukee rotation is also spoken Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddie Peralta and Eric Lauer in the top four places. Wilson could be in contention for last place with the likes Aaron Ashby and Adrian Hauser. An injury to anyone in the rotation could open things up a bit, but it’s also possible for a couple of the guys in this trio to end up in the bullpen as long relief options.
