Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto just posted a short statement on Twitter saying that the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated movie won’t be out this year.

The film, which still has no official name and hasn’t released a single promotional image, was originally scheduled to hit theaters on December 21. Now, however, it will be in cinemas in April 2023:

This is Miyamoto. After consulting Chris-san, my partner at Illumination, on the Super Mario Bros. film, we have decided to push the global release to Spring 2023 – April 28th in Japan and April 7th in North America. My deepest apologies, but I promise it will be worth the wait.

Unfortunately, “Chris-san” isn’t Chris Pratt, it’s Chris Meledandri, the CEO and founder of Illumination, the animation studio behind Despicable Me, which is making the film.

That’s a long way off, but it also kind of explains why, aside from a slew of casting announcements, we haven’t seen or heard virtually anything about this film since it was first announced.

Please feel free to make your own “A delayed movie is good after all, but a rushed movie is bad forever” quotes below, but keep in mind that the original quote is probably something Miyamoto never actually said !

By the way, I’m a big fan of this tweet. The Nintendo of America Twitter account is usually a very formal, structured place where meticulous planning and public relations work takes place. This reads like Miyamoto just snatched the microphone out of someone’s hands at a party, or like the President, he also has a big red phone on his desk, only it transcribes tweets and can overwrite the passwords of all regional Nintendo accounts .

While this news is disappointing in itself, please give Nintendo, more executives and developers the space to tweet personally
