Caracas, 6 January (EFE).- Venezuela and Turkey have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties during a phone call this Friday between the Caribbean country’s new foreign minister, Yván Gil, and his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Çavusoglu.

“We will continue to work together to further strengthen our bilateral ties,” Gil said on his Twitter account, which is the first activity reported by the Venezuelan official following his appointment, announced by President Nicolás Maduro this Friday.

In this sense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported via the social network that Gil “thanked his Turkish counterpart for the congratulations” with which he “confirmed the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation that consolidate both peoples and governments”.

Relations between the two countries were boosted in June last year with the signing of three deals on finance, agriculture and tourism during Maduro’s visit to Ankara as part of an 11-day international tour during which he visited five other countries.

Gil, an agronomist who studied at the Central University of Venezuela, the country’s main university, was appointed the South American country’s foreign minister by the head of state this Friday.

After the appointment, the former Vice Minister for Europe thanked the congratulations sent on Twitter by the foreign ministries of Cuba and Russia, two of Venezuela’s main allies. EFE
