Bogotá, 7 January (EFE).- Colombian President Gustavo Petro will travel to Caracas this Saturday to hold an “extraordinary bilateral meeting” with his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro, official sources reported today.

In a brief statement, the Colombian Presidency indicated that the meeting will take place at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) and did not report on the topic that the two leaders will discuss in their second meeting after the , which took place in the Venezuelan capital in early November last year.

“Today will be President Gustavo Petro’s second visit to Caracas following the re-establishment of relations between Colombia and Venezuela. I will accompany him with the conviction to continue working for a common agenda between two sister nations,” wrote Ambassador of Venezuela on Twitter Colombia in Caracas Armando Benedetti.

This “extraordinary bilateral meeting” also comes six days after the governments of both countries commissioned the Atanasio Girardot binational bridge, also known as “Tienditas”, which connects the department of Norte de Santander to the state of Táchira, which is another step towards normalization of their relationships.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries, severed in February 2019, were resumed at the end of August and the commercial reopening took place on September 26 with the reactivation of passage through two other border bridges, the Simón Bolívar and Francisco by Paula Santander.

Along with Cuba and Norway, Venezuela is also one of the guarantor countries of the peace negotiations with the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the main place of the talks.

Petro’s visit to Caracas also comes on the eve of a trip he will make on Sunday to Santiago, where the Colombian President will meet on Monday with his Chilean counterpart Gabriel Boric, as well as with the presidents of the two legislative houses of that country. EFE
