The collision between two subway trains in Mexico City left at least one dead and 16 injured, according to the capital’s authorities. The accident happened on metro line 3 between Potrero and La Raza stations. In a message posted to his Twitter account, the capital’s government secretary, Martí Batres, initially said there were also “four people alive, arrested, who are being rescued.”

Prime Minister Claudia Sheinbaum made it clear shortly afterwards that three of the four people arrested had already been rescued. Sheinbaum visited Michoacán. According to the Mexico City communications office, the state governor, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, has loaned him a helicopter for his quick return.

Police chief Omar García Harfuch, together with secretary Batres, visited the media at the scene of the accident. Harfuch: “The cause of the accident is currently being determined by subway staff and experts from the public prosecutor’s office. We don’t want to speculate. The entire train was evacuated, most of the injured on their own feet.” García Harfuch did not provide any further information on the person who died. In a statement, the Mexico City Attorney’s Office has said it has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.

The Mexico City Metro has faced various problems over the years. Maintenance issues have emerged on various lines following the brutal May 2021 accident on line 12 that left 26 dead and a hundred injured. Last year, Sheinbaum himself announced the closure of Line One to reform the system.
