CONFERENCE ON WAR CRIMES
Justice ministers from many countries will gather in London in March for a conference in support of the law International Criminal Court (Cpi) that supposedly investigates War crimes in Ukraine. This was announced by the British government. the meeting, jointly organized by Great Britain and the Netherlands, will be held at Lancaster House, chaired by UK Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and Dutch Justice and Security Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius. It aims to increase global financial and practical support for the ICC and coordinate efforts to ensure the means are in place to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The meeting – according to the London government website – comes as Russia intensifies its terror campaign against Ukraine, affect important energy infrastructure and plunge people into the dark, freezing cold of winter. In liberated areas of Ukraine, prosecutors continue to collect evidence of sexual atrocities and assaults.
Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice, Dominik Raab, stated: “Russian armed forces should know that they cannot act with impunity and we will support Ukraine until justice is done. Almost a year after the illegal invasion, the international community must give strong support to the ICC so that the war criminals can be arrested responsible for the atrocities we witness. The meeting will allow countries to determine how to provide further support to the Court. This includes practical support such as assistance in gathering information and sharing evidence of atrocities committed on the ground. Ministers will also discuss how to help victims and witnesses testify without causing them further harm.”
Together with the US and EU, the UK has already set up the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group to support investigations and funded a training program for Ukrainian judges on conducting war crimes trials. Thirty judges are already taking part, and a similar training program for prosecutors in Ukraine, led by the UK’s Royal Prosecutor’s Office, is due to start later this year.
