More than four dozen abused Chihuahuas recently rescued from a home in Northern California are now up for adoption.
The 50 dogs were rescued from “dirty conditions” in December at the home of a man in North Livermore, a town about 40 miles east of San Francisco.
According to the Livermore Police Department, many of the dogs were found locked in crates with no food or water at the time of their rescue.
Officials say the 50 dogs have now received clean bills of health and are in the process of being taken to loving families while police continue their investigation.

The Livermore Police Department said in a post that officers first became aware of the situation in December and were called to investigate.
Upon arriving at the home, the group found that the owner was hoarding the dogs and was unable to care for them.
As of January 8, the homeowner’s name was not released.
“The Livermore Police Department’s Animal Services Officer lodged a complaint with the District Attorney’s Office, which is currently under investigation,” the department said in a post.
reached out to prosecutors to see if charges had been filed against the homeowner, but received no response at the time of publication.
The Chihuahuas were taken to the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin and treated.

The post received dozens of comments
One woman said “Thank God” for rescuing the dogs
Another person said they hope the “hoarder” “is able to get help.”
Community members thanked Livermore Police for saving the animals in their Facebook post on Friday announcing the rescue of the puppies.
“Thank you LPD for saving these precious babies,” one person wrote.

This rescue comes just days after dozens of Chihuahuas were rescued from the scene of a car crash in New Mexico.
A pickup truck crossed the center line on a Santa Rosa lane and collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Several animals were killed in the crash, but large numbers were also rescued.
Many of the original 65 dogs rescued were pregnant at the time, and the number has now grown to over 100, according to local officials.
This number is expected to grow.
Police said Missael Rodelo, 40, of El Paso, was driving and was subpoenaed for not staying in a lane.
