Ariana DeBose reunites with Steven Spielberg at the National Board of Review Awards in NYC

Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose met with fellow West Side Story director Steven Spielberg at the 2023 National Board of Review Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan on Sunday.

The North Carolina native, who turned 32 on January 25, wore a sleek black velvet pant suit over a silk camisole that reveals the cleavage and matching heels, chosen by styling duo Zadrian Smith + Sarah Edmiston.

Ariana’s suit featured sparkling embellishments on the lapels and she complemented the whole chic look with leaf stud earrings and an Omega watch.

Hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew styled DeBose’s natural pixie cut, and makeup artist Andréa Tiller accentuated her features with shimmery eyeshadow and a pink pout.

The Westworld actress beamed with joy as she hugged the iconic 76-year-old filmmaker at the industry event.

Ariana was most likely there to perform her presenting duties when Steven accepted the NBR trophy for best director for his critically acclaimed autobiographical flop The Fabelmans.

At one point, Spielberg and DeBose were joined on the gray carpet by his second wife, Kate Capshaw, to whom he has been married for an impressive 31 years.

The Tony-nominated triple threat also congratulated 20-year-old Gabriel LaBelle, who won a breakthrough achievement award for his thinly veiled portrayal of the three-time Oscar winner as a teenager.

Ariana and Steven previously worked together on his critically acclaimed 1957 theatrical adaptation of the musical, based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet.

DeBose then became the first openly queer actor of color to win Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her powerful and heartbreaking role as Anita (previously played by EGOT champion Rita Moreno).

“The moment was important to me and became very important to a lot of communities and I’m grateful for everything that happened, but it was a pressure cooker,” the multiracial beauty told Women’s Health last month.

“I felt that every day and now I still feel it afterwards. This year there have been times when I’ve been lonelier than ever…

“My biggest fear was that I would become a poster child for all the big things that I represent and that people would say, ‘Okay, great, you got that Oscar. can you go now please That’s a blip.” I show up to work every day to prove them wrong.”

It’s unclear if Ariana – who came out as “queer” in 2015 – still has a romance with MJ The Musical’s assistant costume designer Sue Makkoo, with whom she was last pictured on June 15.

Last July, DeBose wrapped her role as Emma Tate in the second season of the ’60s/’70s of Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio’s musical comedy Schmigadoon! Streaming later this year on Apple TV+.

‘Blowing the post on Season 2 of Schmigadoon!’ Cinco continued to tease Twitter 09/26

‘And [I] I don’t want to spoil anything but can say we have 6 full 30 minute episodes coming your way, way more songs than last season and the whole cast – [including] Newcomers @Instatituss & @pagepatrick – is spectacular! I think you will be satisfied.’

The Golden Globe winner also has upcoming roles in Season 2 of the Apple TV+ reboot Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter and Disney’s animated feature Wish.

But Ariana’s first taste of fame was at age 18 when she appeared in the sixth season of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, where she made the top 20.

On the way to 'Schmicago!' Last July, DeBose ended her role as Emma Tate in the second season of Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio's musical comedy Schmigadoon! Streaming later this year on Apple TV+
