The “Glory” is on its way to China. The tugs got the ship afloat after about a couple of hours. The authorities expect only “minimal delays”

A cargo ship has run aground in the Suez Canal, the strategic waterway connecting Asia with Europe by sea. This was confirmed by the Leth company, which manages operations in the area, and then announced their return to shipping. The “M/V Glory” got stuck at Al-Qantarah heading south and the Suez Canal Authority tugs are trying to get her afloat again. “The ‘Glory’ was refloated by tugboats from the Suez Canal Authority,” he later told Leth. “Twenty-one southbound ships will continue their voyage. Only short delays are to be expected.”

The charge

It’s unclear what caused it to run aground, but parts of Egypt, including the northern provinces, experienced a wave of severe weather on Sunday. The Suez Canal is an important trade link between Asia and Europe. The Joint Coordination Center, the joint coordination center in Istanbul that controls exports of commercial food and fertilizers from Ukrainian ports, has announced that the Glory – 255 meters long – is transporting over 65,000 tons of Ukrainian corn to China.

The predecessor of 2021

The incident commemorates the March 2021 incident when the Panamanian-flagged ship Ever Given – some 400 meters long – ran aground in the Suez Canal, causing it to be blocked for six days and a number of boats on it was waiting to traverse the area carrying $9 billion worth of goods a day. According to Leth, on December 6 the canal recorded a record 112 ships passing through (65 southbound, 47 northbound). From January 1 to November 30, 2022, 21,609 boats sailed in both directions.
