Rede Globo made an unprecedented decision and dropped its Sunday schedule to show GloboNews journalism on open television after vandal attacks on the Three Powers in Brasília this Sunday (1/8).

The decision was supported by Luciano Huck, presenter of “Domingão”, who criticized Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters for actions against Brazilian democracy on his Instagram profile and expressed his outrage.

“It is written on our flag: ORDER. Without it there is no progress, no growth, no inclusion. The hour demands even more respect for the democratic constitutional state. Brazil, our orderly people and our democratic institutions deserve to be protected from these extremists,” he wrote to Lucian.

Globo not only showed the host’s program, but also interrupted the film “Avengers: Infinity War” to broadcast live news about the chaos in Brasilia. After introducing Poliana Aritta straight from the “Fantástico” studios, the channel opened the GloboNews signal to all of Brazil.

It was only by the time of “Fantástico” that the program returned to “normal”, again with Poliana turning into an extension of the station’s journalism and focusing entirely on the invasion. Globo also adopted the term “terrorists” to define antidemocracy protesters.

Competitors’ reactions were divided. With a journalistic tradition, Band also began providing heavy coverage, both on open television, with Datena, and in Band News.

Record TV and SBT, on the other hand, have been criticized on social media for ignoring the coup demonstrations in Brasília. The two channels showed live scenes from Brasília, but soon resumed normal programming with screenings of “Eliana” and “Hora do Faro” respectively.
