The leadership of the Popular Party has decided to nominate Daniel Sirera as candidate for mayor of Barcelona. The appointment will become official after the party’s electoral committee meets, according to El Periódico and party sources have confirmed to this newspaper. Sirera will replace Josep Bou, who led the 2019 candidacy and became two mayors. The PP, which is waiting for Ciudadanos to resolve its situation, was the last of the parties to have the opportunity to get council members to choose their candidate’s name.

Popular sources claimed until weeks ago that Sirera was not an option because he lived in Valencia and focused on that community’s PP. The future mayor was a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia and a member of the Consell de l’Audiovisual de Catalunya (CAC).

Bou announced his resignation as the party’s next candidate in local elections last July, claiming he was making his resignation public “so that the party can decide in peace on the name of the front runner.” It turned out that the businessman from Barcelona lost his most important supporter within the formation with the departure of Pablo Casado as leader of the Populares.
