“Tonight there is twice as much competition and twice as much drama. Get ready for a twist no one will see coming!”
That was Ryan Seacrest’s ominous warning ahead of Monday’s American Idol show, which held the franchise’s first-ever Judge’s Song Contest, before saying goodbye to another promising couple. And by “another couple,” we mean just one thing, because Seacrest wasn’t kidding about there being a big twist.
Here’s how it worked: Each of the judges – Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie – chose a song for each of the remaining 11 contestants. Whenever a contestant chose one of the judges’ songs, the judge who chose it received a point. And then, you know, math.
Bryan and Perry eventually parted ways, each amassing four points in the opening contest, followed by Richie with three points. However, what we didn’t learn until the end was that the winner of the contest – or winners in this case – had to save one of the bottom two contestants.
