State powers call for defense of democracy in Brazil

The Brazilian President began the day this Monday with a series of high-level meetings in his office

The heads of the three state powers in Brazil published a joint note on Monday in which they “reject” the terrorist acts of the radical Bolsonaristas in Brasilia and called on the population to “defend peace and democracy”.

The note “In Defense of Democracy” is signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; by the Interim President of the Senate, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo; by the Mayor Arturo Lira; and by the President of the Federal Court of Justice (STF), Rosa Weber, reports Telesur.

The highest representatives of the three powers met this Monday to analyze the grave crisis experienced in the Brazilian capital on Sunday, when thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and caused serious damage to the seat of parliament, the presidency and of the Supreme Court.

“The Powers of the Republic, defenders of democracy and the 1988 Constitutional Charter, reject the acts of terrorism, vandalism, crime and coup that took place in Brasilia yesterday afternoon (Sunday),” the text reads.

The note also noted that the heads of state “are united for institutional action to be taken,” arguing that the country needs “normalcy” and “respect.”

“We call on society to remain calm in order to defend peace and democracy in our homeland.”

Other Supreme Court justices such as Luís Roberto Barroso and Dias Toffoli were present at the meeting with Lula da Silva, as were several cabinet ministers such as the head of the Civil House, Rui Costa, or the head of the Treasury, Fernando Haddad; of Justice, Flavio Dino; and Defense, José Múcio, among others.

The President began the day this Monday with a series of high-level meetings at his office, the only place saved from the devastation carried out Sunday by radical Bolsonarists trying to overthrow him.

1,200 Bolsonaristas arrested in Brasilia

For their part, the police forces of the federal district of Brasilia on Monday arrested 1,200 Bolsonaristas as part of the evacuation of the camps in front of the army headquarters that have been set up since Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was confirmed as president-elect , Telesur publishes.

The dismantling comes after Federal Court of Justice (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes issued an injunction giving the putschists 24 hours to leave the site.

The judge pointed out that “nothing justifies the existence of terrorist camps, funded with the complacency of civil and military authorities in a totally subversive manner and without any respect for the constitution”.

Likewise, current federal district safety officer Ricardo Cappelli indicated that “we will not allow the continuity of concentrations that act as incubators for plans against the democratic rule of law.”

The camps were cleared without the use of force by law enforcement officers. After the execution of a fence, the Bolsonaristas withdrew from the area, leaving the erected tents abandoned.

The camps had been set up since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was confirmed as the winner of the elections with the aim of not recognizing the outcome of the popular will.

These rallies served as the basis for the reprehensible invasion of right-wing extremists into the headquarters of the three powers yesterday and as a turning point after the failed coup d’état.
