Last Thursday, the man made a spectacular escape from the Regensburg District Court. The police have already arrested him in France. Lawyers for him are now accusing the district court.
The convicted murderer who escaped from the district court in Regensburg, Bavaria, has been caught. The 40-year-old man was captured by investigators in France near the border with Germany, police said late on Monday. Details are not due until Tuesday.
The Algerian fugitive and an accomplice attacked a lottery house in Nuremberg in 2011 and killed the 76-year-old owner. In 2013 he was sentenced to life in prison and has been imprisoned in Straubing ever since. He had to answer to the Regensburg district court for resisting police officers in prison.
Window escaped during the break in negotiations
Last Thursday, he escaped through a courtroom window during a break in the hearing. According to police, the man had been untied for a conversation with his defense attorney. However, the judge only ordered the handcuffs removed for the main hearing. There was no court order to remove the handcuffs.
The spokesman said it was not possible to answer why the accused managed to enter the lawyer’s office without being tied up. Until further notice, the room will only be accessible to lawyers and non-custodial clients.
The defender of the person who fled last week filed complaints against those responsible in the district court. Lawyer Moritz Schmitt-Fricke told “Focus Online” that the possibility of meeting with clients was unresolved there in two respects. On the one hand, the lawyer criticized the fact that the room had a frosted glass that made it difficult to see, on the other hand, he criticized the unlocked windows.
