“I’m having a blast!”: Carol Vorderman has revealed she has five “special friends.”

When asked by Michelle if she was in a relationship, Carol quipped, “No! I’m having the best time. I spoke about it once. I have a system that I have had for 10 years. They are called “special friends”.

“I was talking about having ‘special friends’ a few months ago and again it was like the world had collapsed for some people, but actually I found out there were a lot of women who were like, ‘Me never thought about it like that.”‘

Carol added that she has “long-term relationships, if you will” with her special friends – and has been with some for years.

Love life: Carol has been very candid about her complicated love life, saying she is “not into one-night stands” but dates several men she affectionately calls her “special friends”.

She said: “One is 11 years old, the other is seven years old, you know everyone is single. It’s a happy place. I hasten to add that I am not into one night stands.”

“The language around a woman of my generation is that if you had more than one partner, when you got married this was you, that was you. Everything was pejorative towards a woman, that was the environment I grew up in. It was like “she’s desperate,” everything was judgmental.”

Carol continued: “Well you can take all this and throw it out the window, that’s my polite way of saying it.

‘But it doesn’t hurt. It’s a happy place to live. The only thing that was sold to me when I was young was a fairy tale about a poor girl, meets a prince, they get married and they live happily ever after.”

“This whole assumption, ‘Do you already have a partner? Do you have a man?’ Well, no, actually I have five.”

Michelle responded by calling the math genius a “legend.”

Carol has previously spoken out about her many “special friends,” including an astronaut who “calls her from the space station.”

She said This Morning: “I live my life in chapters, and you said, and this chapter, since I was about 50. So I’ve lived a much freer life for the last ten years.

“I’ve never felt more free. So I ignored the search for one person and I have a number of what I call “special friends”.

She continued, “I don’t really want to get married again. I don’t really want to live with a man again. Have to keep an eye on him all the time. But this is a time to break that nonsensical taboo that says a person should only be looking for another person who will satisfy everything in their life. This is hell.”

Adding her “special friends,” Carol explained, “They don’t know each other, but they know about it. It’s a very honest relationship.

“One of them has been around a lot longer than my marriage. Yes, it’s over 10 years. Another is seven. He is an astronaut. He called me from the space station.”

Carol has been single since separating from journalist Des Kelly in 2007 after being married twice, first to Christopher Mather in 1985-86 and then to second husband Patrick King from 1990-2000. The couple have two children together.
