The live stream of Ford’s F-150 Lightning unveiling just ended a few minutes ago, and while there wasn’t much new or groundbreaking information about the truck itself, Ford CEO Jim Farley dropped a pretty small nugget during his speech.
“We’re already shoveling dirt in Blue Oval City, Tennessee for another electric pickup truck that’s different than this one,” Farley said.
That means another EV Ford truck is already in the works. For now, details are as scarce as possible, but chances are it’s based on either the Maverick or the new Ranger that’s due out soon.
Of course, as more information comes out about the new Ford EV pickup, we’ll bring it to you. Chances are it’ll be quite a hit considering Ford really can’t make enough cars right now.
Farley also teased an “extended lineup you haven’t seen before.”
EVs are sort of the name of the game for the future of FoMoCo. Farley says the company will be making about 600,000 electric vehicles a year by the end of next year. That number will grow to over 2,000,000 in just four years.
“We plan to challenge Tesla and everyone else to become the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer. Two years ago, no one would have thought we could do that,” said Farley. “Look at this truck and believe it.”
Right now, Farley says the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, where the Lightning is made, can build up to 150,000 trucks a year. The plant has been expanded twice to prepare for the full production ramp-up of the electric vehicle pickup. The land on which the Rouge plant is located has been home to Ford production for over 100 years – dating back to the Model A.
Another thing we learned during the livestream is that despite his EV name recognition, Farley isn’t afraid to attack Tesla. He made two comments about the company — including one regarding when the Lightning’s competitors would actually be produced. *cough* *cough* Cybertruck *cough*.
I’m sorry, there was something in my throat.
