Swedish government paves the way for new nuclear power plants

The Swedish government wants to legislate to allow more nuclear power plants to be built. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said today that this should boost power generation and increase energy security. He has made the development of nuclear power a key objective of his right-wing government.

Sweden’s energy mix mainly consists of nuclear power, hydropower and renewable energy. Although the country has so far been unaffected by the turmoil over gas supplies caused by Russia’s war with Ukraine, electricity prices are high.

Adoption in Parliament still open

The proposed law, which still needs to be approved by parliament, would allow new reactors to be built at additional sites across Sweden. “We have an obvious need for more power generation in Sweden,” said Kristersson.

The new legislation would repeal existing regulations that limit the total number of reactors to ten and prohibit building reactors on sites other than the existing ones. Sweden currently has six operational reactors – half of what it once had.
