The President of Ukraine gave a short, recorded speech during the Golden Globes in which he delivered a message of hope.
Volodymyr Zelensky surprised the audience at Tuesday night’s Golden Globes with a recorded speech. The President of Ukraine, whose country has been facing Russian invasion for almost a year, appeared on the giant screen at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, where the awards ceremony was held, to deliver an optimistic message.
Sean Penn, who has repeatedly spoken out against the Russian offensive, presented the Ukrainian President’s short speech. He then drew a parallel between this 80th edition of the Golden Globes and the very first in 1944:
“The Second World War wasn’t over yet, but the tide was beginning to turn and everyone knew who was going to win. New battles and new tears came, and there the Golden Globes were created to reward the best actors of 1943.”
“The year is 2023 and the war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning,” he continued. “And it is now clear who will win. More battles and more tears to come, but now I can tell you who was the best last year: it was you. The free people of the world Those who mobilized to support the free people of Ukraine in our common struggle for freedom, democracy, the right to live, to love, to give life, whoever we are, where we come from, no matter who we are with.”
“Ukraine will stop Russian aggression”
It concludes with a promise: “The First World War cost millions of lives. World War II cost tens of millions. There will be no third world war. This isn’t a trilogy. “Ukraine will stop Russian aggression on its land Come together to a free world and I hope that you will be with us on the day of our victory.”
Shunned by Hollywood and stripped of television last year after allegations of racism and corruption, the Golden Globes ceremony has been overhauled with a series of reforms to improve diversity within its jury and ban its members from accepting gifts from the studios. This 80th edition marked his grand return to the air.
Stephen Spielberg received the Best Drama and Best Director award for The Fabelmans, which is largely based on his childhood. The Irish tragic comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, which tells the abrupt end of a friendship on an imaginary island in the 1920s, won three Golden Globes, including Best Comedy and Best Actor for Colin Farrell.
On the television side, the Game of Thrones spin-off titled House of the Dragon walked away with the award for Best Drama Series. The Best Comedy Series award went to Abbot Elementary. Check out the full list.
