World University Games: Carabins Athlete Named Flag Bearer

A first athlete from the Université de Montréal Carabins will be Canada’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the World University Games in Lake Placid, namely the captain of the women’s alpine ski team, Caroline Beauchamp.

22-year-old and cross-country skier Alex Meycock, who represents Nipissing University, were selected to wear the maple leaf on Thursday. The medical student won gold and bronze in giant slalom at the FIS events on the slopes of Mont Tremblant last December.

“I feel very honored and privileged,” Beauchamp said in a statement. It is my great pleasure to lead the delegation. This award embodies all the effort I have put into skiing over the years. I hope to represent my country and other Canadian athletes well.”

The World University Games begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.
