United Nations, 11 January (EFE) and transparent on allegations of excessive use of force and human rights abuses.

Through his spokesman, Guterres said he was “following with concern” the situation in the South American nation, where nearly fifty people have been killed in violent protests over the past four weeks.

According to spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief “calls on the authorities to ensure respect for human rights and to ensure that a thorough, independent, impartial and transparent investigation into allegations of excessive use of force and human rights abuses is conducted”. .

Guterres also stresses that the demonstrations must be peaceful and respect life and private property.

Peru endured a tragic day of protests last Monday in the southern Puno region, in which at least 17 protesters and a police officer died in clashes with police, bringing the death toll to 46 across the country since December 11.

In addition to Guterres, various UN bodies such as the organization’s representation in Peru and the Human Rights Office have expressed their concerns about the situation in the country.

The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress, the bringing forward of general elections to 2023 and the convening of a constituent assembly.

The protests began tentatively on December 7 after the failed self-coup of then President Pedro Castillo and spread from the 11th of the same month.

A ceasefire began at Christmas and lasted until last Wednesday, when protests resumed in the south of the country, particularly in Puno and the neighboring department of Cuzco. EFE
