More than half of German companies have problems filling vacancies. This is the result of a survey of nearly 22,000 companies published by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK).

“We assume that around two million jobs will remain vacant in Germany,” said DIHK Deputy General Manager Achim Dercks. “This corresponds to a potential creation of lost value of almost 100 billion euros.”

According to the DIHK, the situation worsened again compared to the previous year. Never before have so many companies had trouble hiring new employees. The situation is relatively stable in the job market, despite the corona pandemic and the energy crisis. “But a dangerous mixture has been brewing under the surface for some time now,” says Dercks. This not only puts pressure on individual companies, but also slows down infrastructure expansion, the energy transition and digitalization.

53% of companies said in the survey that they were affected by staff shortages. In the case of electrical equipment manufacturers, it reaches 67%, as do many in mechanical engineering. In vehicle construction, it is 65%. With health and social service providers, 71% complain of difficulties.
